Cups to Grams Conversion Guide for Common Ingredients
Converting cups to grams is not as simple as using one universal multiplier. Cups measure volume, while grams measure mass. The number of grams in a cup therefore depends on what ingredient fills that cup.
Why one cup does not equal one fixed number of grams
A cup of flour, sugar, honey and butter each has a different mass because each ingredient has a different density. Packing method, moisture, brand and measuring technique can also change the result.
Volume vs weight
Volume tells you how much space an ingredient occupies. Weight tells you how much mass it has. For liquids with similar densities, volume conversions may be straightforward. For dry ingredients, density differences matter much more.
Why baking benefits from grams
A kitchen scale can be more repeatable than scooping dry ingredients into a cup. Flour is a classic example: a tightly packed cup can contain noticeably more flour than a lightly spooned and leveled cup.
Use ingredient-specific conversions
When a recipe gives cups but you prefer grams, choose the ingredient first rather than relying on a generic cup-to-gram chart. Our Cooking Measurement Converter uses ingredient-specific estimates for common pantry items including flour, sugar, butter, honey, oats, rice and cocoa powder.
When should you keep the original measurement?
If a baking recipe provides grams, use those grams when possible. Converting from a carefully tested weight into volume and then back into weight can introduce unnecessary rounding and measurement error.
Regional cup sizes also matter
A U.S. customary cup is about 236.59 ml, while a common metric cup is 250 ml. That means the same ingredient can produce a different gram estimate depending on which cup standard the recipe uses.
